THROUGH THE SPIRIT SCREEN, presented at Pt. 2 gallery is an homage to the countless handmade altars that can be found in the Eastlake neighborhood of Oakland, CA, where I lived for nearly five years. During the height of the pandemic, I made an effort to explore and observe the endless nooks and crannies of my surroundings, eventually coming to discover these altars. I amassed a sizable collection of photographs of each altar I saw, which became a series of works on their own, serving as inspiration for THROUGH THE SPIRIT SCREEN. Through this process of aimless wandering, searching, and documenting, coupled with a bit of research, I developed my own spiritual practice and was able to excavate a small part of my ancestral culture I had previously never known. This installation is an invitation, a portal, a meeting place, and an offering of respite for anyone struggling amidst the chaos of current times.
